Amaya Challenger

2024 Scholarship Recipient

Northern Illinois University

Amaya plans to study Psychology and become a Clinical Psychologist.

"I enjoy giving back to my community because it is rewarding. Not only am I learning skills for myself but I am also helping others in the act. I am a firm believer in helping my community because communities shape the world to become a better place for everyone. Not everyone in this world has an easy life or easy access to things. This made me realize that no matter where you are you can make a change towards our community. I have been taught from these experiences to be thankful for the life I have and to always lend a hand to those around me."

"My community has provided me so much support throughout my life, and I wouldn't be where I am today if not for their generosity. I love being able to pay it forward to others through my community service activities."

Tamsy Leverton

2024 Scholarship Recipient

Rockford University

Tamsy plans to study psychology and become a professional volleyball coach.

"Both my parents are cancer survivors, with my Dad still under care recently diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Watching them face their medical issues since the age of 6 has given me the courage to pursue my dreams and always go above and beyond while prioritizing what I believe is important in life. I believe to whom much is given, much is expected. I’m not a doctor or an oncologist, but when I share the skills I have in my community, I know I am making a difference in the lives of the people I coach, my teammates, and co-workers. Being a service to others is what life is all about. Helping others towards a lifelong passion like mine is the gift only I can give."

Timberlyn Turner

2024 Scholarship Recipient

Howard University

Timberlyn plans to become a multimedia journalist and specialize in black news for black people, and one day own her own news channel.

"I enjoy giving back to the community because it not only provides me with opening doors and opportunities for others, it helps improve community connections amongst others besides myself. It builds up others and allows us as a community to flourish and set examples for generations to come. I enjoy giving back because the community will continue to give back in more ways than one - whether it be socially, financially, or educationally - it sparks a continuous cycle that can only get better."
